Carl was approached by Welcome to Yorkshire, the official tourism agency for the region. Their 2012 team Yorkshire Gold, is working with the London organising committee of the Olympic Games on a competition to create a customised Yorkshire version of Wenlock and Mandeville, the official London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic mascots.
The competition (which has now closed) is challenging children and young people up to the age of 18-years-old to create a logo that reflects their region and community, with the best entries becoming the official mascots in their areas.
Carl, as a Welcome to Yorkshire Patron, was tasked with putting together a panel of top creative judges for Yorkshire and will chair the judging process to take place on January 17.
Speaking about the competition he says: “As a Welcome to Yorkshire Patron I was delighted to be asked to chair the judging panel to find a London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic mascot for Yorkshire as designed by students of the area.
“I have been asked to lead the team and look forward to working with some of the top agency, brand and creative guys in the county. All are professionals that I have admired and known for years but never worked with.
“I think the Mascot competition is a great way of getting the young people of the region engaged with this tremendous, once-in-a-lifetime event of hosting the London 2012 Olympic Games.”
The Yorkshire winner will join shortlisted students from all 12 nations and regions in the United Kingdom who will all travel to London to pitch their ideas to a panel of high profile judges.
Winning students will then spend time with a top design agency refining their work before it is used on official London 2012 products in stores and online which will be launched during the one year to go celebrations next summer.
